Episode 11 - "The Cliff Over There, That’s the UK !" (english)

In this episode, we will move away from the Mediterranean and talk about a border within Fortress Europe, the English Channel. A migratory route that has existed for a long time, a route that has recently become maritime, and a route that has not stopped being more and more used over the last 3 years.

par Chroniques aMER

The English Channel has recently become the fourth largest region of AlarmPhone.

In 2021 more than 28,000 people managed to reach British shores by sea.

With the growing military presence in Calais and Dunkirk, supported and funded by the British government, with the securitisation of the port of Calais, with the increase in security guards in the many car parks, with the fences and barbed wire, with the UK’s exit from the European Union and the Dublin agreements, and with the lack of reception facilities for exiled people in Europe,

more and more travellers are trying their luck from the Côte d’Opale, Northern France or even Belgium.

This is the case of the travellers who left Berck on the 20th of November 2021, whose story we will share in this episode.

This is also the case for A, who tells us why he took an inflatable boat to reach England.

But the Channel is not a recent border zone, ’no border’ activists have been organising in the Calais Migrant Solidarity collective since 2009 and have been working on the ’Watch the Channel’ project since the end of 2018. From Calais, Elen tells us how Watch the Channel intervenes to create links with people before they leave. The dual goals : to share information on risk prevention before crossings and to document the evolution of the authorities’ response on both sides.

Warning : Because the border regime is nothing if not violent, including between France and the UK, this episode and the cases that are told may be difficult to hear.
